The beautiful seaside village of Matala is a small village at the south of the prefecture of Heraklion, overlooking the Libyan Sea. Before some years Matala was a small fishing village. The village had gained a great reputation and began to develop in the 60s and 70s, because it was the pole of attraction of the “hippies”, or otherwise called “the children of flowers”.

Matala is built in a lee bay, at the end of a small valley and between the hills of Nisos and Kastri. The beach has fine gravel and the waters are clear and deep. There are impressive formations of sunken rocks of sandstone on the sides of the bay, which end up in the sea, and inside are formed unique caves, giving a magnificent image of the landscape.

The beach is organized with loungers, umbrellas, showers, lifeguard services, beach volleyball, water sports, snack bars, etc. Furthermore, you will find unique fish taverns, where you can taste fresh fish and special Cretan dishes, enjoying the serenity and magic of the sea and of the landscape. There are also beautiful cafes and bars to drink your beverage.

You will find tourist shops, that sell folk art, various handmade and souvenirs, supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacy, taverns and graphic cafes. There are hotels and rooms to let that offer high quality services for a comfortable and pleasant stay, while within the village and very close to the beach there is an organized camping.

With a rental vehicle you can explore wonderful beaches such as Kommos and Kokkini Ammos, or head towards the traditional villages of Sivas and Kamilari, or go to the village of Zaros with the beautiful artificial lake Votomos, from which starts a path that leads through the gorge of Agios Nikolaos to the forest of Rouvas. Last but not least, visit the nearby archaeological sites of Phaistos, Agia Triada and Gortina.
