The impressive Frangokastello (the Castle of Franks) with its beautiful beach lies at a small plain on the southeastern coast of the White Mountains, very close to the village of Hora Sfakion It is one of the most famous beaches of Crete with its main characteristic the imposing Venetian Fortress.

The Venetians built the castle in the period 1371-74 for protection against pirate raids as well as from the insurgent Sfakians. The name originally attributed to the castle was Agios Nikitas, but the locals renamed it to the present name, which means the castle of the Franks, that is, of the foreign Catholics. Historical battles took place in the region both during the Venetian occupation and during the Ottoman domination. The legend of “Drosoulites” is main characteristic of the castle. They are the shadows of warriors that appear late in the spring, in the early hours around the castle and are lost to the sea, linking Frangokastello with the battle between Greeks and Turks in May 1828.
