The idyllic village of Fodele is an oasis of greenery, flowers, colors, fragrances and waters. It is located in a mountainous area, surrounded by an orange and lemon grove valley, which is crossed by the Pantomantris River.

Archaeological finds, which came to light, reveal that the village is built in the place of the ancient town of Pantomatrion, whose name was given to the adjacent river.The name of Fodele was taken by the first settler’s name mentioned in Crete in the 13th century.

Fodele is a small and quiet village, lush with plenty of water. During the summer, in the square of village, the visitor will find cafes to enjoy its coffee under the coolness of the ancient plane trees, and taverns where he can eat under the sound of the waters and the singing of the birds. Its inhabitants are simple, warm and hospitable, with main occupation of agriculture, especially the citrus cultivation, less the livestock farming, while they have also developed remarkable activities in the field of handicraft and folk art.

Fodele is considered the birthplace of the great painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos or El Greco. So it is worth visiting his home, in the settlement Archontiko, which operates as a Museum of replicas of his works. In the same settlement, you will find the small Byzantine-style church of the Eisodia of Theotokos, which, as it is said, inspired El Greco. Walking along the picturesque alleys of the village, you can go to the churches of Agios Georgios and of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, while outside the village you will find quite beautiful chapels.

With a rental car you can head to the beach of Fodele, which is 3 km from the village. Located in the estuary of the Pantomantri River, is sandy with shallow water, and in the western part of it, is organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, cafes, restaurants, taverns, water sports etc. There is also a small moat to protect against the wave. The eastern part of the beach is unorganized and is suitable for quiet and remote escapes.

Finally, an incredibly beautiful route, having hired a vehicle, is towards to the village of Marathos, where in the area of Podare and very close to the monastery of Agios Panteleimonas, you will find some amazing waterfalls during the winter months.
