The Port of Agios Nikolaos is located in the center of this beautiful seaside town, to the area of Ammoudi, near to lagoon “Boulismeni” and the archaeological museum.

The history of Agios Nikolaos is marked by its harbor. It was chosen the area of ​​Ammoudi to make an important port for Eastern Crete, because the islets of Agioi Pantes, in front of it, offered better defense against possible invaders and significant protection from the northwest winds, which can be quite strong. At the period of Venetian domination, the port of Agios Nikolaos could accommodate up to 25 galleys, a fairly large number for the era, meeting the needs of Eastern Crete. The two islets of Agioi Panta, the natural breakwaters of the harbor, today host a few Cretan Wild Goats, the well-known Kri-Kri, which is threatened with extinction.

The port serves commercial boats and fish boats throughout the year, while during the tourist season the traffic is incredible increasing, serving cruise ships, pleasure boats and sailing boats. It is no longer serving scheduled ferry services, so that it has managed to keep the cosmopolitan element intact without the noise of the successive ships that would enter and leave the harbor.

The period between Spring until Autumn, tourist boats depart daily, at different times, from Agios Nikolaos Port to nearby destinations, such as the small islets of Agioi Pantes (All Saints) opposite of the port, the famous beach of Kolokitha, the beautiful town of Elounda and the well-known island of Spinalonga.
